I actually forgot that I’d watched this before, if that tells you anything. Suffice it to say that if you like foreshadowing that’s laid on so thick that the plot twists are obvious, then by all means watch The Others. This movie is basically 104 minutes of waiting to find out that you were right. If by some chance you did not see the “twist” coming, then perhaps you enjoyed the others; but, I find it unlikely that anyone missed it before its reveal.
I will say that The Others was not bad in terms of atmosphere. The tone was, overall, fairly dark and mysterious. Nicole Kidman has sort of a naturally ghostly quality about her, and the children were sufficiently strange; though the fact that they are British kind of makes it seem like they’re normal. I guess that ultimately there just weren’t enough monsters/ghosts/scary critters for me. There are few successful horror films that rely on suspense and the skill of the actors alone, and in cases when these types of horror are successful there must be something special that drives the film. The Others just didn’t have anything special going for it.
I really don’t have anything else to say about this movie. It wasn’t really terrible, it just wasn’t great either.
